Sumburgh Airport is located on the south of the island, close to main Island road, the A970. In 1979 a new terminal building opened for oil industry with the airport designed to cater for the efficient transfer of oil industry personnel between fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Since 1982 the Wilsness Terminal has also been used for scheduled service passengers and over 100,000 passengers use the airport each year. There is a combined shop and café situated in the main terminal building which offers a selection of local souvenirs, confectionery, hot and cold food and beverages and alcoholic drinks. Sheltand Airport Facilities, BT payphones are available throughout the terminal building and the Tourist Information Point provides a computer for internet and Email access. A wide-screen television is located in the main lounge area. Facilities for the Disabled, Disabled toilets are provided within the main terminal building and wheelchairs are available. Ambulift facilities are available to assist passengers with impaired mobility during embarkation and disembarkation from aircraft. There are ramp facilities at the entrance.
